Monika Motylinska ist Architektur- und Stadthistorikerin, die sich für die Zyklen der Architekturproduktion des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts im "Globalen Süden" interessiert. Seit Januar 2020 ist sie Nachwuchsgruppenleiterin im Projekt „Conquering (with) Concrete. German Construction Companies as Global Players in Local Contexts“ (Freigeist Fellowship der VolkswagenStiftung, Januar 2020-Dezember 2024). Zugleich forscht sie seit Oktober 2019 zusammen mit Dr. Rachel Lee im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Forschungsprogramms "Centring Africa" (Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/Canadian Center for Architecture) über das Wirken des Instituts für Tropenbau in Tanzania und Senegal (https://www.cca.qc.ca/en/61282/centring-africa-postcolonial-perspectives-on-architecture).

Zwischen 2016 und 2019 war sie Postdoktorandin und Gerda-Henkel-Stipendiatin in einem Forschungsprojekt über die DDR-Architektur im Ausland am IRS. Im Dezember 2016 verteidigte sie ihre Doktorarbeit an der Technischen Universität Berlin über den Umgang mit dem Architekturerbe der Nachkriegszeit in Deutschland. Ihre Promotion wurde von der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes gefördert (Februar 2013 bis Januar 2016).

Sie hat einen Master-Abschluss in Denkmalpflege und Denkmalkunde der Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Universität Torun und einen Master-Abschluss in Kunstwissenschaft und Kunsttechnologie der Technischen Universität Berlin. Sie ist Mitglied des EAHN, der SAH, der EAUH sowie des Bauhaus-Instituts für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur und Planung in Weimar.

Conquering (with) Concrete. German Construction Companies as Global Players in Local Contexts

Global construction companies impact our futures. Beyond the edifices and infrastructures they construct, they also fundamentally influence governmental development aid policies, or dislocate people to build a new dam, for example. Yet the role of these major global players and their persistent presence in different world regions has barely been reflected upon. Our project investigates how major German construction companies conquered markets and spaces, thereby cementing their presence in different regions of the Global South, and it will trace the footprints left behind, long after the dust of the construction sites settled. It draws on the observation that it is impossible to fully understand the complexity of the built environment in these regions without acknowledging and analysing the role of construction companies such as HOCHTIEF AG or Bilfinger Berger as actors, stakeholders, transnational legal entities and major driving forces in the processes of globalised construction business. mehr Info

Constructing Transport Architecture in West Africa. A Multi-Scalar History of Materialities, Territories and Actors (CTRAAF)

Das deutsch-flämisch-ivorische Gemeinschaftsprojekt CTRAAF untersucht Genealogien, Materialisierungen und Hinterlassenschaften verschiedener Formen von Verkehrsarchitektur in Westafrika, von den 1950er- bis zu den 1980er-Jahren. Zu dieser Zeit wurde in ganz Westafrika eine große Welle von Infrastrukturprojekten vorangetrieben. Verkehrsinfrastrukturen waren dabei Projekte des Nation Building.
