Peter Eckersley arbeitet seit September 2019 im Forschungsschwerpunkt Politik und Planung - Forschungsgruppe Urbane Nachhaltigkeitstransformationen am IRS. Seit Januar 2022 ist er im Verstetigungs-Projekt „Urbane Resilienz gegenüber extremen Wetterereignissen – Typologien und Transfer von Anpassungsstrategien in kleinen Großstädten und Mittelstädten (ExTrass)“ beschäftigt, nachdem er 2019-2021 in der Forschungs- und Entwicklungsphase dieses Projekts tätig war. Seine Forschungsinteressen liegen in den Bereichen Lokale Governance, Klimawandel, Policyforschung und Sparpolitik. Neben seiner Tätigkeit am IRS ist er Herausgeber (Managing Editor) der referierten wissenschaftlichen Zeitschrift Local Government Studies und arbeitet in Teilzeit als Senior Research Fellow an der Nottingham Trent University in Großbritannien.

Zuvor war Peter Eckersley als Postdoktorand am Fachbereich Politikwissenschaft an der University of Sheffield tätig, wo er an einem Projekt arbeitete, das die Auswirkungen des Brexits auf die Umweltpolitik Großbritanniens untersuchte. Er hat auch als Postdoktorand am Environment Department an der University of York gearbeitet, wo er die Auswirkungen von Finanzkrise und Sparmaßnahmen auf die Umweltpolitik im europäischen Mehrebenensystem analysierte. Davor war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Newcastle University Business School und forschte dort zu lokaler Governance, Nachhaltigkeit und Corporate Social Responsibility.

Seine Promotion in Politikwissenschaft an der Newcastle University konzentrierte sich auf die Frage, wie die voneinander abweichenden intergouvernementalen Systeme in England und Deutschland zu unterschiedlichen Ansätzen im Klimaschutz in jeweils einer Stadt in den beiden Ländern führten.

Vor seiner Tätigkeit in der Wissenschaft  arbeitete er zehn Jahre lang in verschiedenen Forschungs- und Beratungsfunktionen für das britische Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy und hat dabei Kommunalverwaltungen zu empfehlenswerten Strategien und Managementansätzen beraten.

Urbane Resilienz gegenüber extremen Wetterereignissen – Typologien und Transfer von Anpassungsstrategien in kleinen Großstädten und Mittelstädten (Forschungs- und Entwicklungsphase) (ExTrass)

ExTrass möchte deutsche Groß- und Mittelstädte besser gegen Hitze und Starkregen wappnen. Hierzu werden hemmende und fördernde Faktoren der urbanen Klimaanpassung analysiert und erfolgreiche Maßnahmen identifiziert. Ein Schwerpunkt der Projekttätigkeit finden in drei Fallstudienstädten - Potsdam, Remscheid und Würzburg - statt. Hier werden u.a. Begrünungsmaßnahmen getestet, eine klimaangepasste Stadtplanung angestrebt, Daten zum Stadtklima ergänzt, die Bevölkerung durch Kommunikation für Risiken sensibilisiert und Notfallpläne verbessert.     Engagement ist Voraussetzung für kommunalen Klimaschutz
    Neuer Artikel in Zeitschrift „Politikum“

    Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung sind in Deutschland freiwillige Aufgaben der Kommunen. Entsprechend gibt es auf kommunaler Ebene große Unterschiede, ob und wie der Klimaschutz angepackt wird. Einige wenige Städte wurden schon Anfang der 1990er-Jahre mit ehrgeizigen Zielen zu Vorreitern. Vor allem in kleinen Kommunen ist die Mehrheit aber erst sehr viel später aktiv geworden – oder bis heute noch gar nicht. In einem Beitrag in der Zeitschrift „Politikum“ zeigen Kristine Kern, Wolfgang Haupt, Elisa Kochskämper und Peter Eckersley von der IRS-Forschungsgruppe „Urbane Nachhaltigkeitstransformationen“ nun die wichtigsten Trends kommunaler Klima- und Nachhaltigkeitspolitik auf. mehr Info
