Seit 2020 ist Paul Sprute wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Nachwuchsforschungsgruppe Histories of the Built Environment im Forschungsschwerpunkt Zeitgeschichte und Archiv. Von 2020 bis 2023 arbeitete Paul Sprute im "Freigeist"-Projekt "Conquering (with) Concrete: German Construction Companies as Global Players in Local Contexts" an seiner Dissertation "Harbouring Globalisations" über postkoloniale Hafenbauprojekte in Westafrika, die von deutschen Bauunternehmen gebaut wurden. Seit 2024 arbeitet Paul Sprute als Post-Doc im Forschungsprojekt "Constructing Transport Architecture in West Africa: A multiscalar history of materialities, territories and actors" in Zusammenarbeit mit der Universiteit Gent und der Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.

Zuvor studierte Paul Sprute Politikwissenschaft und Geschichte an der Universität Bremen und den Masterstudiengang Global History an der Freien Universität Berlin und Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In seiner Masterarbeit beschäftigte er sich mit der Fortführung der internationalen Solidarität der ehemaligen DDR im wiedervereinigten Deutschland durch den Verein Solidaritätsdienst International.

Conquering (with) Concrete. German Construction Companies as Global Players in Local Contexts

Global construction companies impact our futures. Yet, the role of these global players and their persistent presence in different regions has barely been reflected upon. This project uses German construction companies as a prism to address a wide spectrum of economic, political, environmental or cultural impacts in specific local contexts throughout the long 20th century and aims to critically analyse success stories and moments of failure. This choice is triggered by the label ‘Made in Germany’, which was established in the late colonial period and remains an unquestioned marker of quality. Focusing on production cycles, the research team scrutinises global flows of capital, labour, know-how and construction materials, primarily in West and Southern Africa as well as Latin America. mehr Info

Constructing Transport Architecture in West Africa. A Multi-Scalar History of Materialities, Territories and Actors (CTRAAF)

Das deutsch-flämisch-ivorische Gemeinschaftsprojekt CTRAAF untersucht Genealogien, Materialisierungen und Hinterlassenschaften verschiedener Formen von Verkehrsarchitektur in Westafrika, von den 1950er- bis zu den 1980er-Jahren. Zu dieser Zeit wurde in ganz Westafrika eine große Welle von Infrastrukturprojekten vorangetrieben. Verkehrsinfrastrukturen waren dabei Projekte des Nation Building.
