What’s wrong with the Climate COP system? Understanding why the Climate Change treaty negotiations cannot work

All humanity relies on the UN system to produce effective agreements to tackle the climate crisis—both by reducing emissions to reach Net Zero and by supporting global adaptation.
In this talk, Terry Cannon argues that this system is fundamentally incapable of delivering the necessary results. He will explore how governments remain vulnerable to subversion, intense pressure, and corruption by fossil fuel interests, preventing the crucial breakthroughs we urgently need.
Terry Cannon is a teacher and researcher in development studies, most recently at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex (UK), with specialisms on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. He is Honorary Professor at UCL (London) in the Department for Disaster Risk Reduction. Recent work was on Bangladesh, and in 2009 he helped Saleemul Huq to set up the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) where he was active in research and capacity building for students, government and NGOs, leading courses on climate change and disaster reduction in Asia and Africa. He is one of the co-authors of At Risk: natural hazards, people’s vulnerability and disasters (1994 and 2004, 2nd edition), which has become one of the most widely cited and used books in the field.
