Too Political to Be Credible? Too aloof to be relevant? Debating Activist Scholarship
Public Panel Discussion | IRS Spring Academy 2026
Researchers increasingly seek to engage beyond the academy by co-producing knowledge with social movements, urban communities, activists, and policy actors. While activist scholarship opens up new horizons, it also raises significant epistemological questions and practical challenges. This panel explores these dual pressures: lecturers will discuss academic concerns regarding the credibility of such knowledge, while also addressing critiques from within social movements regarding scholarly involvement. We will conclude by pondering the consequences of global authoritarian trends for the future of activist scholarship.
