Topics and Methods in Digital Spatial Research | Leibniz R - PhD meeting 2023

Exploring Digital Space-time | Public keynote lecture with Rob Kitchin, Maynooth University

The Leibniz R Network involves 7 institutes around Germany working on spatial studies from different angles. This year, the R network's PhD workshop (sponsored by the Leibniz Association Enrichment funds and the IRS) is held on February 9th-10th, 2023 at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS) in Erkner near Berlin. As part of this, the public keynote by Rob Kitchin will take place.

Abstract on the public keynote
Digital technologies are having a profound effect on the temporalities and spatialities of individuals, households and organizations. For example, we now expect to be able to source instantly a vast array of information at any time and from anywhere, as well as to buy goods with the click of a button and have them delivered within hours, while time management apps and locative media have altered how everyday scheduling and mobility unfold. The presentation will examine the relationship between time and space in the digital age, examining the production of digital timescapes. It will illustrate the argument by charting the timescapes of smart cities.

Rob Kitchin is a professor at Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute and the Department of Geography. His research mostly focuses on the production of digital geographies. He is the (co)author or (co)editor of 34 academic books and (co)author of over 200 articles and book chapters. He has been an editor of Dialogues in Human Geography, Progress in Human Geography and Social and Cultural Geography, and was the co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Encyclopedia of Human Geography (1e). He was the 2013 recipient of the Royal Irish Academy’s Gold Medal for the Social Sciences.
