Prof. Dr. Kristine Kern
Research Associate | Politics and Planning

Kristine Kern (Research Group Urban Sustainability Transformations) joined the IRS already in 2012. From December 2017 to December 2020 she was guest professor at Åbo Akademi University in Turku (Finland), where she is Docent in Public Administration since 2010. She also worked as a Professor at the Faculty for Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Potsdam (2012-2016). Currently, she is guest researcher at the Institute of Local Government Studies of the University of Potsdam. Moreover, she was employed as Universitair Docent in the Environmental Policy Group (ENP) at Wageningen University, The Netherlands (2008-2012), Visiting Research Professor at the Department for Life Sciences at Södertörn University, Huddinge, Sweden (2007-2008), and DAAD Guest Professor at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA (2005-2007).

After her studies in Public Administration, Economics and Political Science in Stuttgart, Tübingen and Berlin she earned her PhD in Political Science (Freie Universität Berlin, 1998), which was awarded the Joachim Tiburtius Dissertation Award of the State of Berlin. Kristine Kern then joined the DFG Graduate School “Democracy in the USA” at the John F. Kennedy Institute of the FU Berlin as a postdoc researcher (1997-1999) and subsequently worked as a senior researcher at the Berlin Social Science Center (1999-2005).

In 2007/2008 she was awarded Riksbankens Jubileumsfond’s research prize for a one-year research stay at Södertörn University (Sweden). In addition, she frequently serves as a reviewer for the evaluation of research proposals at national and international level (for example for the European Commission and the European Research Council).

Her current research interests concentrate on local and regional climate and energy governance, the sustainable development of cities and regions and the scaling of local experiments.

Projects

Ongoing Lead Projects

The project examines large-scale projects as profound disruptions that shake the well-rehearsed routines of institutions and can lead to institutional change. The project examines the large-scale project of the Tesla settlement in comparison to other case studies with regard to disruptive effects on policy and planning and thus tests the transferability of the term disruption to policy and planning research. more info
