Gentrification and Housing Affordability: Policy Actions for Diverse Populations in African Cities — The Case of Cameroon

IRS Brownbag-Seminar by Dr. Mildred Endam Acha, University of Bamenda

This seminar examines the relationship between gentrification and housing affordability in Cameroon, with particular focus on the cities of Yaoundé and Bamenda. Against the backdrop of rapid urbanization, population mobility, socio-political instability, and growing housing demand, the study investigates how processes of gentrification influence spatial variations in housing affordability in relation to household incomes. The seminar will discuss the effectiveness of existing housing policies and rental-price regulations in promoting adequate and affordable housing for diverse urban populations in the context of Cameroon.

Dr. Acha Mildred Endam is a TWAS-DFG Visiting Scholar at the IRS from September to November 2026. She holds a PhD in Geography and Planning from the University of Bamenda.
