Book launch 100 years of Tempelhof Airport

New History of Tempelhof Airport

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Tempelhof Airport, a new overall presentation will be published at the beginning of October, which was conceived and compiled by the research area  "Contemporary History and Archive" of the IRS. In addition to project manager Harald Engler, the IRS team of authors includes Małgorzata Popiołek-Rosskamp, former staff member Andreas Butter and Elke Dittrich. The Tempelhofer Feld once served as a field for the village of Tempelhof and as a Prussian parade ground before Berlin's first large airport was built here one hundred years ago. On the occasion of this anniversary, the four authors trace its history from its beginnings in the Weimar period, the monumental expansion during the Third Reich, its post-war use by US troops and as a civilian airport until its closure in 2008, but of course they also devote attention to the current use of the site as a huge inner-city leisure park. Their focus is on the urban development as well as the aviation, cultural and social history of this attractive inner-city site, which has been the subject of heated debate for years. The volume focuses on the urban and everyday historical analysis of the development of the field and airport, provides new archival material and offers new interpretations of the historical genesis of Berlin's first major passenger airport. The publication contains rich and new photographic material and is aimed at a broad readership.
