Spaces and Conflicts in Tension

New Publication on Spatial Conflicts and Conflictual Spaces

Spaces and conflicts are directly linked today. A new publication investigates the interrelations between the two and explores the role of the globalization era, with its manifold challenges, in shaping these dynamics.

The recently published edited volume "Spatial Conflicts and Conflictual Spaces. The Dynamics of Refiguration" examines the refiguration of space as a theoretical concept and presents empirical studies on spatial conflicts as well as emerging conflictual spaces across different regions and scales. The book was published in early August by Routledge and edited together with Vivien Sommer, Hubert Knoblauch and Barbara Pfetsch.

The contributions adopt different theoretical approaches and geographical perspectives. They are united by the thesis that the refiguration of space marks a new phase after globalization. Through a spatial lens, the book offers insights into the dynamics of social order in the post-globalized world. The chapters analyze how conflicts emerge within space, how spatial dynamics shape social tensions, and what role digital mediatization, public communication and new infrastructures play in this process. In addition to the empirical analysis of conflicts in space, the volume also elaborates general rinciples of the spatial dynamics of social conflict.

The book is structured into five thematic parts, illustrating diverse contexts in which spatial conflicts manifest:

  • Macroregimes and spatial conflicts
  • Tensions in digital spaces
  • Land rights and conflictual spaces
  • Social exclusion and spatial knowledge
  • Struggles over ecology and space

"Spatial Conflicts and Conflictual Spaces. The Dynamics of Refiguration" appeals to researchers, urbanists, sociologists, geographers, and anyone interested in the principles of spatial social dynamics.
