Since July 2019 Madlen Pilz has been working as researcher in the projects „From demolitions to immigration? New perspectives for peripheral estates” (StadtumMig) and "Estates after Transition" (EAT) at the IRS.

She studied European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin as well as Cultural and Social Anthropology of Latin America at Freie Universität Berlin and Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE) in Quito. Thereafter she worked as project assistant at the economic development agency “Wirtschaftsförderung Berlin International GmbH” (2000–2004) and made documentary films about everyday life in post-Soviet Russia. In 2008 she returned to Humboldt-Universität to carry out research about the post-socialist urban transformations in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. The project was part of the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB 640) “Changing Representations of Social Order”. In her investigations she focused on the transformations of urban representation, materiality and the urban everyday life. Therefore, she carried out a social-anthropological transect through the city covering the city’s Centre as well as the urban outskirts, and analysed public events like the anti-government protests in 2009. She finished her PhD “It is not Georgian! Post-socialist practices of urban exclusions” with a fellowship of the Leibniz-Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in 2015, and continued to work as researcher at the IfL until May 2019, inter alia, in the project “Dealing with diversity on the margins of the postmigrant city. A comparison between Munich and Leipzig“. Within the project she carried out the research on the public negotiations around migration and integration in Munich looking at the discourses in selected public media and at everyday practices at different places and institutions within the city.

From Shrinkage to Immigration. New Perspectives for Peripheral Large Housing Estates (StadtumMig)

The joint project examines potentials and problems of former urban redevelopment neighbourhoods ("Stadtumbauquartiere") in transition to arrival neighbourhoods for immigrants. The joint project is divided into five sub-projects. Sub-project 1 "Governance" is being worked on at the IRS. It examines planning principles and actor constellations in the cities of Cottbus, Schwerin and Halle (Saale) to enable better governance of change by municipal actors. more info

Estates After Transition (EAT)

The research aims at studying recent challenges in the development of large housing estates in postsocialist cities. It is based on a comparative approach and includes six case studies in Estonia, Germany, and Russia. Resarch on the neighbourhoods Halle-Neustadt and Berlin-Marzahn will be conducted by the IRS. Thereby, the project focuses on actors, their interests and resources and observes the consequences of their constellations for the development of housing estates. more info

From Shrinkage to Immigration. New Perspectives for Peripheral Large Housing Estates (StadtumMig) - Implementation and Consolidation Phase (StadtumMig II)

Germany has officially been a country of immigration since 2005. Ten years later, the arrival and reception of Syrian civil war refugees, as well as the current arrival of Ukrainian refugees, have shown how much the state and society have changed. Since May 2019, the joint project StadtumMig I has been examining these changes in selected large housing estates in three eastern German cities. Building on these results, the second phase of the project will work on central challenges in the municipalities in greater depth. more info
