Alexander Obeth works at the IRS since it was founded in 1992, being special commissioner for the acquisition of personal papers within the Research Area "Contemporary History and Archive / Scientific Collections for the History of Building and Planning in the GDR” since 2013.

Alexander Obeth studied History at the Universität Leipzig and was a research assistant at the GDR Building Academy from 1982-1989 (at first in the construction information unit, then in the Institute for Urban Planning and Architecture).

In 1998 he received training as a scientific documentarist at the Institute for Information and Documentation of Potsdam University of Applied Sciences.
