Dr. Burcu Togral

Dr. Burcu Toğral Koca completed her undergraduate studies in International Relations (major) and Sociology (minor) at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara. She received an MA in European Studies and PhD in Political Science from the University of Hamburg. Funded by Hans-Böckler Foundation, her PhD research, titled “The Securitization of Migration in Europe in the post- September 11 era: A Comparative Analysis of Germany and Spain” offers an in-depth empirical analysis on the securitization of migration. During her PhD study, she stayed as a visiting scholar at the University of Kent in Brussels and the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset in Madrid. 

Before coming to the IRS, she worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Eskişehir Osmangazi University in Turkey between 2014-2017 and taught undergraduate and graduate courses on politics of migration, social movements, history of political thought and political sociology. Besides, she was also the Institutional Coordinator of the International Relations Office of Eskişehir Osmangazi University and coordinated Erasmus and other international/national exchange programmes between January 2012 and January 2016.

Her fields of research interests are securitization of migration, border control practices, biopolitics of security, social movements and racism. Her most recent publication is “Syrian refugees in Turkey: from “guests” to “enemies”?” (2016).

Her current project at IRS explores the relationship between migration, urban regeneration and the right to the city with a specific focus on the interaction between Turkish migrants and Syrian refugees in Berlin.
