Against the background of working out a new, integrated concept for urban development, the City of Halle (Saale) commissioned the IRS with the statistical analysis of small-scale social-spatial change in Halle (Saale) for the period of 2011-2014. The analysis was based on the assessment of municipal statistical data and pursued the goal of identifying changes of the social structure of quarters.
In the foreground of the analysis there was on the one hand the question if certain sub-areas in Halle are particularly characterised by social problems. On the other hand it was analysed if the distance between these areas and Halle´s “average” is becoming smaller or bigger. Two statistical methods were applied: on the one hand the tiered approach to index calculation. On the other hand, the method of trend analysis, coming from economic geography, is applied. Based on this, a status, a dynamics, and a development index are calculated, each of which, when it comes to the development of social problems, gives the status and the trend in 33 districts of Halle (Saale) compared to the entire city.
